MAIL ME ART AND SOME FRUSTRATIONS...

"Mail Me Art is a British-based project, run by Darren Di Lieto, the founder and co-editor of the illustration news portal the Little Chimp Society. Over the course of a year, the first Mail Me Art project brought together a vast collection of artistic work sent in the form of mail by both professional and amateur artists of all ages from across the world. A wide variety of media were used in an equally wide variety of styles and the work arrived on everything from postcards and envelopes to boxes and pieces of wood.

Contributions included work by internationally-renowned illustrators such as Dan May, Michael Slack, Jon Burgerman, Kristian Olson, Catalina Estrada and Jeff Miracola and in total there were in excess of 600 pieces of mail art submitted to the project.

Mail Me Art culminated in the publication of the book Mail Me Art: Going Postal with the World’s Best Illustrators and Designers and the exhibition, held in London during April 2009.

Mail Me Art 2 is now up and running. It is hoped that this will be as successful as the first project – if not more so!"

So this is an amazing project where anyone can send an illustration in an envelope or a box, as long as the illustration is on the outside and sent by mail! They are running the second edition and they have a lot, and I can tell you, really a lot of amazing work, and there are so many different styles, it is just visually mind-blowing! Another good thing, unlike so many other illustration competitions, this one is open to people all over the world!

I decided to enter, and it was more difficult than I thought... Initially I thought that because of its experimentalist nature would be an easy project where I could go wild and just do whatever suited my mood. I have to say that the high level of the competition has made me quite unsure of myself, so in a way slightly blocked me...At the end I have 2 that I like, but you can only send one a month, not sure if will send the 2 of them or just send one later. I have a favourite one can anyone guess? Because this is a competition I would really like to have your comments back or to tell me what is your favourite so I know which one to send! Next month will have same more for this project!

... and now for some frustration... As I said before I felt a bit blocked while doing this, but above all I guess I was bit tired and frustrated. I don´t have a 9 to 5 job, and some days at work can be long, which can leave me incapacitated for the practice of illustration for the day.and fact incapacitated for anything lol!! Even on weekends, can be hard to do all the small things of life that you only have time to do on the weekend, like groceries and ironing plus one would like to see ones friends eventually and actually chill once in a while! I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do, I haven't drawn on a regular basis for 10 years at least, and I need to improve, and to find if this is something I can do for more than only myself and my (3 it seems :)) followers. But I definitely won´t give up, but some times a bit of moaning can do you good!

A little something I once drew...

Lady Dita

Everytime I look at this illustration I think of Dita Von Teese.

And now for something different-A.R.M. Party

Here's a birthday invitation I made for a tri-birthday party.  It was Inspired by Soviet poster design  and Dexter Power Saw poster (see below), which I personally think is brilliant!

So the story goes like this: I was browsing around for movie poster ideas, when I came across this Dexter poster, which i though was absolutely fab! Love the eyes-on-the-horizon-military kind of look!
Once the idea was clear I just needed a photo of the birthday boys and girl. My boyfriend kindly offered to do so, and here below you can see the initial ones.

After that some photoshop work followed, until the final poster. Of course there are some subtle details, like the belgian flag in the background  (we all live in Brussels-who doesn't anyway?!) or the portuguese tiles in the background (2 of them and myself share this nationality). If anyone happens to need a party invitation give us a mail!

This is it!

I am just a girl who used to draw a lot as a kid, but somehow I lost that feeling along the way... Some boring or stupid art teachers took the fun out of it, and life in general kind of got in the way of actually doing something or improving my skills.

Now I work as a fashion and graphic designer for a very unfashionable company, and I get repressed by commercial intentions all the time, so I've decided to rebel, and, well, just creat a blog where I can do WHAT THE HELL I WANT TO DO.
I can do artsy, and even better, pretensious artsy :).

But I would really like to have some feedback in order to become a better illustrator. Advice, sharing tips, questions, challenges, please, give us a call. Or a mail. Or a comment.
